Smart Control for the Future: Understanding Model Predictive Control
Model Predictive Control (MPC) is one of the most powerful and widely used advanced control strategies in modern engineering. Unlike traditional controllers that react only to present errors, MPC looks ahead into the future, predicts system behavior, and optimizes control actions while respecting system constraints. This session introduces the fundamentals of MPC in a simple and intuitive way, making it accessible even for those new to the field. We will explore its key building blocks—prediction horizon, control horizon, receding horizon, and constraints—using real-world examples such as autonomous vehicles and industrial processes. The session will also highlight different types of MPC (linear, adaptive, and nonlinear) and explain how they balance accuracy and computational cost. By the end, participants will gain a clear understanding of why MPC is considered a breakthrough in control engineering and how it is transforming industries ranging from automotive to aerospace and beyond.
