Sometimes we wonder, where is our consciousness? Does it belong to our body, or is it trapped in the neural activities of the brain? These questions have been with us since ancient times, like philosophy and astronomy. However, today, due to the expansion of modern science, many of these questions are already being answered.
Recently, research has fascinated many with the possibility that consciousness could be connected to the universe through quantum mechanics, introducing concepts such as superposition and entanglement, which are essentially related to how it acts, develops, and will help us better understand who we are.
The hypothesis of 2020 Nobel Prize winner in Physics Roger Penrose and anesthesiologist S. Hameroff suggests that consciousness is a quantum process that reveals the structures within the brain’s microtubules, which are the neurons that are integral to the process of consciousness itself. (Orchestrated Objective Reduction Theory)
This theory posits that consciousness operates as a quantum wave due to the structures present in microtubules, facilitated by quantum entanglement and superposition, which enable connections across time and space. Although still under investigation, these results in a very important detail: consciousness is not just biology, but part of the universe.
Some obstacles present
For many years, several scientists did not give credence to this idea because they considered it incompatible with the knowledge of quantum mechanics at the time. Based on the fact that quantum systems normally tend to remain stable in very cold and controlled environments, the opposite occurs with the brain, which remains in humid and warm environments, making it the least likely place for a coherent state.Â
However, German physicist Max Planck, who was considered the father of quantum theory in 1931, said at a conference in Florence, “We cannot enter the world of science without convincing ourselves that consciousness is a fundamental element. Everything we consider existing postulates consciousness.”
This type of testimony now gains more strength with the birth of quantum biology, which studies how quantum mechanics may be implicit in all biological processes. Consequently, criticism has subsided, and more and more physicists and scientists are joining the research.
Quantum biology studies how living organisms use quantum phenomena to exist, such as plants that perform superposition in energy transfer during photosynthesis. The question is: Why do plants maintain this connection, and why doesn’t the human brain?
In general terms, quantum biology studies processes such as genetics, epigenetics, respiration, avian migration, chirality, smell, and photosynthesis. It seeks to explore quantum effects in biological processes that cannot be explained within classical physics.Â
In that case, if these biological processes can be affected by quantum processes, what tells us that consciousness could not be one of them through microtubules? These brain structures could allow a connection between the quantum and the physical and, in turn, the universe.Â

Impactful advances: “The Tuszynski experiment”
Penrose and Hameroff’s collaborator, physicist Jack Tuszynski, conducted an experiment in which he simulated tryptophan tostones, observing the behavior of light within microtubules. In this experiment, they detected quantum reactions lasting up to five nanoseconds.Â
This explains how quantum coherence could be maintained within the brain for long enough to perform fundamental cognitive functions, including conscious perception. This duration is even longer than that experienced by plant chlorophyll. This demonstrates the viability of this theory.

Observing that microtubules can maintain quantum states, the logic would be that if consciousness originates in the two states mentioned, the conclusion would be that we are facing something as amazing as consciousness, perhaps being connected to other quantum particles in the universe. As described in this way, an instantaneous connection between the cosmos and our mind is manifested. Â
Hameroff describes fractal consciousness as invariant in terms of scale, with the ability to intertwine beyond the human body and expand. According to this scientist, consciousness is not computational, but rather arises on a global scale, where it affects all neurons and their connections collectively.
Is it all about numbers?
The Oxford mathematical physicist, who was inspired by Penrose, named Timothy Palmer, made a dazzling proposal that he called “the Theory of Invariant Sets,” suggesting that physical laws have a geometric basis. According to this scientist, the universe and consciousness behave like a strange attraction source, like a fractal structure in the space of the universe.Â
This explains that we could be trapped in fractal paths or routes shared with other existences. Scientist Palmer suggests that free will or intuition itself could be the return of other quantum consciousnesses from parallel universes, linked to the same fractal network.Â
The scientific community is still in doubt
These ideas are innovative, many of them surprising or uncomfortable for the traditional scientific community. Combining spirituality, quantum physics, philosophy, and neurology may be met with skepticism, although all the empirical data collected, such as quantum coherence in microtubules, may open up another scenario.Â
There are several figures, such as Deepak Chopra and Joe Dispenza, who help to understand the concerns between science and spirituality. However, the scientific community’s resistance to quantum consciousness is mainly due to the difficulty in demonstrating the existence of quantum phenomena in the human brain.
How do these changes affect human beings?
We increasingly wonder if consciousness has a connection to the universe through quantum physics. If this is indeed the case, we would all have the ability to expand our knowledge to the maximum, as well as:
In other words, understanding consciousness from a quantum point of view could be not only a scientific matter, but also a philosophical and existential one.
The extension of consciousness throughout the universe is a vision supported by scientific theories, such as Orch OR theory, based on advances in quantum biology and the fractal geometry of the universe. We are just beginning to see the light of a new path for humanity, in which the mind is fundamentally connected to the laws of the universe.Â
Every day, science responds positively to advances related to the consciousness that surrounds us and not necessarily that which is within us. Consciousness is not a simple function of the brain; on the contrary, it may have a connection with the quantum properties of the universe.Â
So, are you capable of breaking paradigms? Although there is no definitive answer to these changes, more and more scientific, spiritual, and philosophical allies are agreeing that consciousness is more complex than we imagine. In this case, the best thing for now is to try to self-evaluate to know ourselves and be prepared for these great changes.Â
