Stay Safe During a Hot Summer: Protect Your Body and Mind

Stay Safe During a Hot Summer: Protect Your Body and Mind
January 2, 2026
Heat stress is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths worldwide, and its impact goes far beyond discomfort. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can worsen existing health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, and mental health disorders. It also increases the risk of accidents and the spread of certain infectious diseases. One of the most serious risks is heatstroke, a medical emergency with a high fatality rate if not treated promptly. Symptoms may include dizziness, confusion, severe headache, nausea, or loss of consciousness. Immediate cooling and medical attention can save lives. Hot weather also affects mental health. Extreme heat can reduce concentration, increase irritability, disrupt sleep, and worsen anxiety or depression. Staying hydrated, taking breaks, and seeking cool environments are essential not only for physical well-being but also for emotional balance. Simple prevention measures make a big difference: Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours Wear light, breathable clothing Use fans or air conditioning when possible Check on children, older adults, and vulnerable individuals Protecting yourself during extreme heat supports overall well-being and aligns with the global goal of good health and well-being, promoted by World Health Organization under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 3). A hot summer doesn’t have to be a dangerous one—awareness and prevention are the first steps to staying safe.
