Core courses in the mining engineering degree program are a key component of the education students will receive. The courses provide students with a comprehensive foundation of both theoretical knowledge and practical experience regarding mining engineering. Among the major topics covered in core courses will be rock mechanics, mining design and planning, mineral exploration, surface/underground mine methods, drilling/blasting technologies, mine ventilation/safety, geo-statistics, mineral processing, geo-technics, and sustainable mining practices. In addition to core courses, students will also take courses related to environmental impact assessments, project management, computational modelling, and advanced research methods.
Each of these core subjects is an integral part of a student’s preparation to meet the current challenges relating to the extraction of resources, safe operation of mines, and the environmentally responsible development of mine operations.
To begin building a solid academic base and preparing themselves for their distance-learning experiences in the course of their studies, students participate in orientations with introductory courses. Typically, the orientation courses will cover academic writing and research skills; Principles of Scientific Investigation; critical thinking and problem solving; and an overview of the mining engineering field. In addition, students are provided with guidance to ensure they are confident and self-sufficient in utilizing AIU’s online mining research fellowship learning platform, resources (e.g Online Library), and the process of individualized mining engineering research study planning.
Our current program focuses on educating students on the importance of conducting high-quality, useful research on current problems facing the mining industry. As a result, many students will focus their research on projects that involve improving safety in mines; understanding rock mechanics and stability of ground; developing new, sustainable methods for extracting resources; creating innovative methods for processing minerals; developing statistical models (e.g. variogram); reducing the mining technology postdoc ecological impact that mines can have; and developing improved mineral engineering postdoc designs for mines.
Others may also investigate how to apply technologies such as automation, remote sensing, and data analytics in order to achieve sustainable development and improved efficiency in the mining industry. By completing this type of project, postdoctoral positions in mining engineering students learn how to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world issues and add value to the engineering profession of Mining Engineering.
Publication – Students participating in the program can publish their academic works that represent innovative concepts and practical contributions to the Mining Engineering discipline. Publication formats often have origins from students’ research projects, case studies, or analytical projects. Examples of topics include; mine safety improvement, environmentally friendly/sustainable mining, new Mineral Processing techniques, and advanced Geotechnical techniques. The information presented in Academic Journals, Conference Proceedings, or AIU’s internal Research Platforms provides students with experience in the practice of Scientific Communication and provides useful knowledge to the World Mining Community.
The dissertation defence represents the culminating activity for this degree program, during which students are able to present their research findings and methodologies to a faculty panel of experts in the field, including Mining Engineering faculty members as well as other professionals who have experience and expertise in the mining industry. Through this presentation, students demonstrate thorough understanding of their selected topics, the rigorousness of their methodologies used to investigate those topics, and the significance of the results produced as a result of conducting this mining safety research postdoc research within the context of Mining Engineering.
Again, the defence process will evaluate both the degree of uniqueness and quality of the student’s research; however, it will also enhance the student’s critical thinking and oral communication skills as well as improve the student’s ability to participate in scholarly discussions.

Students have access to advanced technological resources and support (i.e. subject matter experts) that enable them to construct their own unique study plan, obtain resources specific to their learning goals and receive timely feedback so they can improve their knowledge base and/or skills. This style of learning encourages self-sufficiency, the development of critical thinking capabilities and the use of learned theory in real-world applications. As such, mineral extraction and mining technology learners are provided with the knowledge necessary to develop an extensive understanding of the discipline of Mining Engineering while successfully managing both their work and home lives. By implementing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven system to advise each learner along his or her educational journey, AIU guarantees that every learner will achieve success both academically and throughout his or her lifetime.
As an integral part of their education, students at AIU connect with local and global communities to support social development, improve society’s interaction with nature and create possibilities for the future. Students who earn degrees in sustainable mining and work in conjunction with workplace safety programs collaborate on community projects as well as to form and participate in sustainable mining networks with fellow students, faculty members, and mining experts from around the globe. Each year AIU organizes graduation ceremonies where the students can assist and share their experiences with fellow students and academic members Participation in the ceremony is optional, the day’s events include conferences, research presentations, group meetings, networking, lunch and formal dinner.
AIU promotes participation in symposiums around the world as a way for its students to have an opportunity to present their research; share ideas and meet with experts in other parts of the world. Symposiums allow students to collaborate internationally; learn about the newest technology and practices related to Mining Engineering; and provide networking opportunities for their future career.
At AIU, students participate in two real-time and engaged classes with real-life teachers and other students who are taking the same course each business day. In addition to allowing students to participate in their own study at their convenience, the daily Live Classes will allow students to clarify concepts and apply theoretical ideas to practical examples, receive feedback regarding their written assignments or research ideas, as well as develop their understanding of Mining Engineering Topics through active learning, critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving.

Students at AIU have the opportunity to be involved in the resolution of several real-life industry problems in Mining Engineering via undertaking several ‘Special Projects’ which include everything from creating new Mine Design ideas to looking at ways to improve resource management through sustainable methods. Many of the Special Projects serve as a basis for students to publish research articles in either peer-reviewed academic journals, present works at various conferences and share their work on AIU’s internal websites.
Collaboration amongst students, instructors and their peer groups is also encouraged during the development and completion of these Projects, thus providing students with more opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the areas of Scholarly Research, Technical Writing and Collaborative Work with one another. As a result of the Special Projects, students will develop critical thinking skills, build a foundation of research expertise and learn how to communicate effectively through multiple channels while also making meaningful contributions to the mining profession.
The Career Centre at AIU aims to provide assistance and resources to students and alumni in reaching their professional goals for both the Mining and Engineering sectors. The Career Centre offers assistance with matching jobs to students/alumni, providing guidance through personalized workshops and webinars, resumé preparation, interview skills training, development of professional networks, and providing students with access to a global network of industry contacts. The Career Centre’s educational resources, including Mentorship Programs, Online Training Programs, Education and Training Workshops, will help students understand current trends, best practices, and the types of Leadership opportunities available in the Mining Engineering field. The resources and support provided by the Career Centre will assist learners to transition successfully from their academic studies into meaningful and fulfilling careers in the Mining Industry.
Mineral and mining-engineering programme have been offered by AIU where the graduates are fully qualified to take on many professional roles within the mineral/ mining sector including: Mine Engineer, Mineral Processing Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Rock Mechanics Specialist, Mine Safety Officer, Environmental Compliance Engineer, Mine Planning/Design Consultant, Project Manager, Mining Operations Supervisor, and Research Scientist. Graduate may also work at Regulatory Authority (e.g. government), as a Consultant or a tutor/researcher; students obtain Technical Competancey, Analytical Competence and Leadership Competence in order to be successful in these areas and to provide for Sustainable and Efficient Minerals/Mining Operations.
Through practical application of many tools and software used in the mining industry, students in the Mining Engineering Program develop expertise with many tools and software that are needed for both operation and research within the modern mining environment. There are many tools available for mine design and planning; geological modeling; geostatistical analysis of data; computational modeling and simulation; mineral processing; and data analytics. It is through the application of all these tools that students can become adept at analyzing mining-related issues, optimizing mining activity, and ultimately supporting sustainable management of the earth’s natural resources. By utilizing these different tools, students will be more than equipped to respond to the needs of the mining industry as it changes.
Students and graduates in mining engineering should become actively involved in more than just their academic curriculum. Society membership will provide a wider variety of resources related to mining engineering, including but not limited to access to research and the opportunity to connect other professionals through conferences, certification programs, etc. All of this will aid students and graduates in their professional growth as well as help establish a network of professionals across the globe working in the mining sector.
Applicants to AIU’s Mining Engineering Program must have a strong academic background in Engineering, Geology or another scientific or engineering discipline related to mining engineering. Most applicants to this program will hold a bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering or a related degree from a regionally accredited institution. Admissions decisions are also based on additional selection criteria, including transcripts (where applicable), work experience and publication history, and goals related to the Mining Industry. AIU’s distance-learning program allows selected candidates from different professional backgrounds to complete graduate studies while continuing to work within the mining industry and tending to various other commitments.
Apply online to the Mining Engineering program at AIU, and complete the application using the instructions on the AIU Admissions Page. Applicants will need to upload academic transcripts, proof of each degree earned (and/or have established degrees), as well as create a statement of purpose and submit an optional letter of recommendation. If you are a non-English speaking applicant you may also be required to submit verification of English proficiency. After receiving confirmation of the review, both the applicant and supporting documents will receive acceptance letters via e-mail with further instructions on enrolling and accessing AIU’s e-learning platform. AIU offers flexible distance learning options and allows students to begin their studies at any point throughout the calendar year, enabling students to combine professional, personal, and school responsibilities.
AIU understands that the financial costs associated with obtaining a degree can deter many individuals and has developed a comprehensive set of tools to help students attain their educational goals without having to worry about how they will pay for their education. This includes different types of scholarships and financial assistance based on attributes such as student accomplishments, community involvement, work experience, etc., as well as the most recent figures regarding finances to determine eligibility for either type of support.
Therefore, many students can make their programs much cheaper than what they would have originally incurred if no scholarships were given to them, thus providing the ability for even more people to pursue the same level of education. Additionally, AIU has a personalized financial support system that allows students to work with a financial adviser who can help them determine the best payment structure for their specific needs, whether they are currently employed or juggling school commitments, and it provides academic advising as part of its student support services.
Postdoctoral Study: The Mining Engineering program at AIU has lower tuition rates than traditional on-campus graduate programs, and offers a range of payment options for the working professional or student, including multiple payment plans for students enrolled outside of the U.S. Payment plans can allow students to pay at a rate that suits their needs, rather than having to pay all of their tuition upfront. A variety of scholarships and other forms of financial aid have been established to promote equal access to post-doctoral study, and, ultimately, provide support to students during the duration of their studies.
A Miners Art has published a book entitled ‘Post Doc in Mining Engineering’ to promote advanced research following your PhD and gain more expertise through performing specialized research and making advancements to mining and mineral processing techniques and how to effectively manage resources to be retained for future generations.
A doctorate in mining engineering or any other relevant stream is a mandate.
