The AIU Post Doc (Ph.D.) program in EdTech (Adult Learning) focuses on Adult Learning and is considered to be Fully Online Distance Learning (DOL). Postdoctoral in Educational Technology students can choose an area of focus aligned with their interests. They are supported in developing an independent distance learning research agenda by an academic advisor and by tutors.
The educational technology postdoctoral program curriculum integrates theory (i.e., social psychology, curricular theory, and epistemology) with the application of theory in practice (i.e., planning educational projects, enhancing instruction through technology, and developing an online course). With access to AIU’s andragogy-driven Virtual Campus and a variety of electronic resources, learners work with other learners from around the world; create educational environments supported by technology, and have the opportunity to shape the direction of education policy and practices at their respective institutions.

AIU’s Postdoc Program for Scholars in Technology-based Learning offers advanced level, research-based examination of digital learning and adult learning, along with innovative design of learning experiences. The Postdoctoral Program is based in the andragogical theory of distance education, with a goal to prepare scholars for the development, application, and dissemination of new digital technologies for adult learners.
The Postdoctoral in Educational Technology curriculum emphasizes both inquiry-based research and experiential learning, in order to allow candidates to explore the ever-changing array of digital resources and settings available for online education, including the potential of new MS Office-type Tools; explore how these tools will influence their practice through leveraging historical and current edtech postdoctoral fellowship trends in distance learning and decision making; and explore new digital tools for use with online courses.
The postdoctoral research in educational technology curriculum provides opportunities to foster learner independence, creativity, and global connectedness, while cultivating postdoc in educational technology transformational leaders who will innovatively use technology to enhance teaching and learning.
The Postdoctoral Program in Educational Technology provides scholars with introductory orientation courses on the basic tools, expectations and methods of study for success in a distance learning format focused on adults. Students will gain an understanding of how to use AIU’s Virtual Campus, what the Research Standard requirements are for AIU, and what to expect when academically writing and collaborating digitally. Orientation Courses also provide insight into the principles of andragogy, self-directed learning techniques, and how to use technology in education. Candidates of educational technology research also learn about the format of the program, have an opportunity to develop specific learning goals and begin building the skills necessary to complete an advanced studies in educational technology research oriented online education program.
Scholars enrolled in the Postdoctoral Program in Educational Technology will receive an introduction to the tools used to teach and learn in a distance learning environment as well as how to utilize those tools effectively. The courses will help prepare students for successful online learning experiences. For example, students will become familiar with using AIU’s Virtual Campus, discover what is required for research at AIU, and learn what they need to do to write and work as they collaborate online academically and digitally.
Scholars enrolled in the Orientation Courses gain knowledge of andragogy principles, techniques for self-directed learning, and the ways in which technology can enhance education. These educational technology phd postdoc courses also provide participants with familiarity with the course format and the opportunity to create their own unique learning objectives, while providing participants with initial instructional techniques required to pursue an advanced, research-related online education program.
Publication – The qualified candidate’s (postdoc) student publications (published) reflect their expectations in submitting their research papers from their PD in EdTech, including their view of where digital learning and instructional design and adult learning is headed into the future. Qualified candidates (postdoc) develop (in collaboration with their Faculty) articles on their applied technologies, research results in applied technology, theoretical work based on existing literature within their PD, and case studies based on participant experiences.
In their publications and oral presentations at Academic conferences, the candidate’s (postdoc’s) student publications reflect their level of originality, the potential impact their research will have in the field of education and the global community; and their potential to be a professional leader in their field through original, innovative, and evidence-based research that provides new insights or ideas that are transformative within andragogy, distance education systems, and multimedia technology.
AIU’s Postdoctoral Program in Educational Technology requires candidates to conduct a dissertation defense in which candidates will demonstrate the candidate’s skills in critical thinking, research expertise, and contributions made to educational technology. Candidates defend their original research results before an academic committee, including a description of the significance, methodology, and impact of their research in the areas of Educational Technology, Andragogy and Distance Learning.
A dissertation defense allows candidates to engage in a technology in education research scholarly dialogue with committee members, justify their research decisions, and respond to questions that support the rigor and relevance of their studies as well as provide evidence of a candidate’s mastery of advanced research skills and their ability to make significant contributions to global education practice and innovation.
