The postdoctoral program in Islamic studies will explore many upper-level academic topics in order to advance theoretical understanding and methodological capacity. Scholars will think through contemporary and traditional matters of Islamic theory, law, theology, philosophy, mysticism, and civilization. The quranic studies postdoc program is intended to support scholars in reading original and classical works, as well as contemporary literature, in order to initiate dialogue between traditional scholarship and contemporary thought. Students will focus on social scientific analysis, history, and language in examining the multi-continental and multi-period expressions of Islam. Engaging in ongoing islamic law research alongside a scholarly community will serve to engender originality, depth of argument, and an integrated sense about the evolution of the field of Islamic studies.

What are the Research Projects for Postdoctoral in Islamic Studies ?

Publication – The program is designed to motivate postdoctoral scholars to engage in scholarly dialogue and public-facing work through generation of rigorous research publications. Scholars will be supported to take their initiative and develop it for peer-reviewed journal submissions, edited collections, or conference proceedings, among others, in a way that promotes the scholar’s work to a wider community of scholars. The plan consists of two live, interactive classes each day to provide postdoctoral scholars with a lively and stimulating learning space. Each day’s classes include not only teaching, but classroom time will mainly focus on the students’ argumentation and reception of each day’s primary text and critical text, as well as the practical critical analysis of the texts.

The live class structure allows the student to receive feedback on their work, create collaborative solutions to readings, and generate discussion, creating an interactive community of scholarship. By melding challenging content with an interactive model of engaging pedagogy, the class structure provides ongoing scholarly engagement and supports their understanding of complicated, rigorous topics and continual evolution of research skills and critical thinking throughout the post-doctoral process.

Special Projects, Research Publications, & Co-Authoring

The program promotes collaboration among postdoctoral scholars with an emphasis on special projects, co-authoring collaboration in publishing research, and work that carries their research beyond individual scholarship to wider consumption. Special projects provide opportunities for scholars to research in innovative or interdisciplinary ways, create digital open-access resources, or collaborate on community-engaged research that focuses on contemporary issues in Islamic Studies.

Financial Support & Scholarships

Different types of financial aid and scholarships are offered through the Islamic Studies postdoctoral program to allow scholars to conduct their research in less financially stressful situations. Depending on eligibility status, scholars will be offered a stipend for research, opportunity to apply for travel grants, or for funding to support attending and participating in international symposiums, conferences, and/or workshops.
