The Power of Thoughts, Words, and Emotions: Can They Really Shape Our Reality?

How do you envision your feelings and thoughts shaping your experience in the outside world?

What other potential do you imagine thinking positively and felt could provide for us to experience growth and harmony in our day to day lives?

What do you think about the connection between the mind and matter based on the science of Dr. Masaru Emoto or some mixture of science and spirituality? Why do you think that?

With all that you’ve read, think about writing an essay about thoughts, feelings and reality. In your essay, contemplate how your inner-living (i.e., your mindset, beliefs and emotional state) can you create aspects of your experiences and interactions of the outer living world? You might take cues from Dr. Masaru Emoto’s teachings, theories from psychology, or from your own experiences to clarify your position. At all times, you want to make the best effort to articulate your sense of how positivity, intention, and self-environment relate to your own growth and the development of your space around you.

The Power of Thoughts, Words, and Emotions: Can They Really Shape Our Reality?

Dr. Masaru Emoto: The Person Who Spoke with Water

Masaru Emoto was a Japanese researcher and author and, had trained and practiced as a doctor of alternative medicine. He gained international fame for conducting experiments related to the interplay between human consciousness and the molecular structure of ice. His investigations revolved around a bold hypothesis:

Water that is exposed to positive words, thoughts, and feelings will turn into beautifully formed, symmetrical ice crystal structures; however, any negative energy produces a disorganized mass of ice crystals.

In his experiments, Emoto collected water samples, he then froze the water samples, after which he influenced the water samples using different words and emotions, and then examined the water molecules under a microscope. Words such as “love” or “gratitude” produced subtle, symmetrical and geometric, snowflake-like structures of the water molecules, while words expressing hatred and anger produced a significantly irregular and untenable form, in contrast to the symmetry of the ice crystals created by the positive words.

Ultimately, his powerful images provided visual evidence for many, that words and thoughts have unique vibrational frequencies–and that thoughts can potentially influence matter at the deepest levels. Scientific inquiry and debate continues regarding whether Emoto’s experiment has replicable outcomes or not; however, he awakened a universal recognition that all human consciousness has energetic potential.

Dr. Masaru Emoto: The Man Who Talked to Water

Dr. Masaru Emoto was a Japanese author, researcher, and doctor of alternative medicine who became recognized worldwide for his studies researching the impact of the conscious human mind on the physical structure of water molecules. His work was based on a somewhat controversial premise:

Water exposed to positive words, thoughts, and feelings develops beautiful, symmetrical, ice crystals. Water exposed to negative energy takes on disjointed or distorted shapes.

In the experiments, Dr. Emoto tested various samples of water in controlled environments, and utilized words or emotions, then froze the water and observed the sample under a microscope. One even displayed water that was capped with the word “love” or “gratitude,” formed delicate, geometric, snowflake-like shapes. While samples capped with words like “I hate you” or “anger” formed disorganized and irregular shapes.

The images were compelling, to the point that many of Dr. Emoto’s images hung in frames as case studies of the influence of words and intentions have a vibrational frequency that influences matter. Dr. Emoto’s findings generated dialogue globally and has perhaps engaged consciousness around the vibrational power of human consciousness. Although parts of the scientific community expressed skepticism of the reproducibility of Dr. Emoto’s illustrations, the suggestion of influence, engaged the world around the vibrational energy of the conscious human experience.

The Rice Experiment: When Words Alter Matter

Following the more scientific water crystal experiments, Dr. Emoto created another simple but very symbolic manifestation called, “The Rice Experiment.”

This experiment was done to make the vibrational energy and emotional expression more surface level and observable, to the general public.

Here is how it works:

  • Setup: Two airtight jars are filled half full with cooked rice, and a little water.
  • Labeling: One jar is clearly labeled “Love” and the other jar is clearly labeled “Hate.”
  • Interaction: Each day for thirty days, participants speak loving words to the “Love” jar, and harsh or angry words into the “Hate” jar.
  • Observation: Over time, the rice in the “Hate” jar decays and gets moldy at a much faster rate than the rice in the “Love” jar.  And, as expected, the rice in the “Love” jar ferments much slower and at times is whiter and fresher than the rice in the “Hate” jar.

Of course, the skeptics would point out that other environmental factors altered the outcome of the rice in the jars, however, the experiment serves as a symbol of how emotional energy – positive or negative – can impact our environment and our health.

The Science of Emotional Energy

While Dr. Emoto’s work is at the fringes of what is accepted in the mainstream, there is ample research support in psychoneuroimmunology, stress biology, and quantum physics that to some extent emotions and thoughts do affect physical reality—especially in human physiology.

Negative emotions such as fear, anger, or resentment raise cortisol and adrenaline levels leading to a weakening of immunity, an increase in blood pressure and the increase of cellular aging.

Positive emotions such as gratitude, compassion, or love relate to feelings of agency and reduce cortisol and increase oxytocin and endorphin levels, which can help reduce stress, establish immunity, nurture a sense of equilibrium.

There are studies through organizations such as Harvard Medical School or the HeartMath Institute that document that coherent emotional states can influence the electromagnetic field of the heart and impact our environment or those around us.

So again, from a biological perspective, internal energy—thoughts and emotions—create measurable effects in our external reality.

Mind Over Matter: The Power of Mind in the Physical and Other Reality.

Our brains are constantly changing systems that adapt to the fluid thought patterns. Neuroplasticity or the brain’s ability to adapt to circumstance through establishing new neural connections, indicates that thoughts we apply repetitively can develop and even restructure the physical brain.

Positive affirmations, mindfulness, and visualizing personal success are not just rah rah motivational issues; they are neuro considerations that lead to programming our minds to be successful and resilient. When we shift our attention to optimism and self-belief, we are retraining our brains to search for opportunities and solutions, instead of challenges and obstacles as problems.

This phenomenon has been called many things, but may be most commonly known as the Law of Attraction, which subscribes to the principle that majorly, or mostly, the emotion or belief we hold will lead us to attractive conditions. When separation is observed in metaphysical or psychological- the effect is the same- it is the mind set to condition the realities that we observe.

How to Align Your Energy and Thoughts for Success: Insights from Sadhguru

Spiritual teacher Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev reminds us that “your mind is your greatest power,” and the quality of your thoughts defines how well you experience your life.

Here are five easy ways to align your thoughts and feelings with the results you want:

Practice Positive Self-Talk

Replace the negative thoughts and even self-loathing that may arise with statements that encourage you like, “I am capable, ” “I am loved,” and “I deserve success.”

Communicate Mindfully

Speak mindfully. All words carry energy. Sweetened communication builds relationships, while angry or mindless communication generates toxic feelings.

Practice Gratitude Every Day

Keep a journal prompted to write something for which you have gratitude, however small. This writes over your brain’s wiring of fear to one of abundance.

Meditate Daily

This allows you to sweep away distracting thoughts and allows you to cultivate a deeper awareness of both your emotional energy and your physical energy.

Be Discerning About the Energy You Allow In Your Space

The energy around you (people, setting, and even your media consumption), influences your energies and vibration you emit. Be discerning.

Criticism and the Scientific Debate

Despite the inspirational provocations of Emoto’s work, real criticisms have been leveled against it by scientists. Critics have asked: Where was the control? Where was the repeatability? Where was the blind testing? Given the significance of blind experiments as a method to validate claims, this evidence would not register as scientific.

That being said, there are scholars and practitioners that have made a distinction between “scientific” and a “representation of science.” And its contents and discoveries would serve a purpose for many for the purposes of inspiring or illuminating how conscious thought and energy participates with matter.

Even if thought and emotional compassion is considered a symbolic question, it still evokes a natural truth: our inner state or mind reflects outwardly into matter.

The Bigger Idea: Inner State and Shaping Reality

If the microscopic structure of water can be influenced by thought and feelings, even a grain of rice can or will have the same impact, would it cast a ripple effect into our relationships, careers, communities and well-being.

If we are strategic about producing our positive energy in our thought, word, and deed; we can begin to cultivate an inner environment that will shift the greater manifestation of growth, healing, and harmony.

The implication then, is that reality is perhaps not the exterior construct that has been provided to you, but a projection of inner frequency.

In summary: We Create Our Reality.

In some fashion, whether through a spiritual, psychological or metaphysical framework, there remains a constant. What we think, feel, and voice matters. Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work reminds us of this notion, no matter what science may debate at any given moment, or what new language is applied, there is a deeper truth that prevails: there exists a physical and undeniable energy in the connection of mind and matter. Each experience that we journey through reconfirms this truth: positivity begets peacefulness; negativity breeds chaos.

It is ultimately an experience that is both basic and profound. What you tend within your inner self creates the reality you live in. Engage cosmos in thoughts that inspire; words that lift us; emotions that heal: because every time we do that or every time we act upon it we, in effect, change ourselves, the world, and the people we cohabit with.
