Common curriculum requirements for the Associate Degree program in Kinesiolooy and Physiotherapy include basic classes in human anatomy/physiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, therapeutic exercises, rehabilitative techniques, athletic injury prevention/management; sports nutrition, introductory physical therapy practice, and other selected topics associated with movement sciences. Students of kinesiology and physiotherapy associate degree gain foundational knowledge regarding human movement and recovery, as well as physical activity performance, through exploration of the following areas: motor learning, functional assessments, health promotion/outreach, and basic clinical skills.
The Associate in Kinesiology & Physiotherapy Program Orientation Course(s) provide the building blocks for academic success and professional growth within the health sciences profession through various introductory courses. Course work generally entails Introduction to Distance Education, Writing Skills for Academic Research, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, Information Literacy, and Professional Conduct in Healthcare. These courses provide students with a general overview of kinesiology and physiotherapy as potential careers; furthermore, each course provides an overview of the expected practices/ethics, the required communication skills, and all the responsibilities inherent to working in rehabilitation/wellness.
These courses also assist preparing the student for future academic success as well as preparing them for future clinical settings where they will ultimately be employed.
The Kinesiology and Physiotherapy program has research-based projects that allow learners to use theory-based knowledge to find solutions to fitness, movement and health-related real-world challenges. Examples of research-based projects include case studies on the causes of musculoskeletal injuries, designing exercise programs for specific populations, producing strategies for preventing sport-related injuries, developing rehabilitation programs for post-operative patients, completing functional and ergonomic assessments, and developing initiatives to increase and promote health in the community.
Students also have the opportunity to carry out smaller research projects regarding biomechanics, flexibility training, resistance training, and the impact of physical activity on wellness; thereby developing their analytical skills and ability to utilize evidence-based practice upon graduation, which are both necessary skills for working in physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences.
Publication – Learners enrolled in the Associate Degree in Kinesiology and Physiotherapy program can display their research, case studies, and evidence-based knowledge through publications. Areas of publication will be limited to content associated with the following: research on injury prevention, design of therapeutic exercise programs, analysis of biomechanics, assessment of sports performance, development of wellness strategies, and methods of rehabilitation. Kinesiology and physiotherapy course publications will teach students how to write academically, think critically, and communicate professionally; they also allow kinesiology associate program students to add value to the health and physiotherapy associate degree community by providing a different perspective while strengthening their academic portfolio and employability upon entering the work force.
The submission of a portfolio in the Kinesiology & Physiotherapy Associate Program provides an overall depiction of individual growth as a student from both an academic standpoint as well as an understanding of human movement and rehabilitation principles in practice. Research papers of kinesiology and physiotherapy studies, case studies, exercise program designs, injury assessments, reflection essays, and project work (completed during the course) are possible contents for the portfolio submission.
The organized compilation shows analytical and applied skills of the individual kinesiology and physiotherapy program student and their ability to demonstrate development as a professional in areas such as kinesiology, therapeutic techniques, and health promotion. Therefore, the portfolio provides evidence of the skills and abilities that have been developed and gained through completion of the kinesiology and physiotherapy studies program.
