Enhancing Jamaica's Productivity for Sustainable Growth

Jamaica’s long-standing low productivity hampers economic growth and competitiveness. Despite multiple initiatives, progress remains limited due to weak institutional support, management practices, and a lack of sustained effort. Strategic labor market reforms, technology adoption, and data-driven policies are essential to boost productivity and improve living standards across sectors.

Assignment Transcript

This report examines Jamaica’s productivity challenges over the past 30 years, highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms. Despite various initiatives, productivity levels have remained stagnant or declined, primarily due to inadequate measurement systems, management practices, and attitudinal issues towards efficiency. Key sectors like manufacturing and agriculture face high operational costs and low technological adoption, impacting competitiveness. Wages and unit labor costs have increased faster than productivity, leading to inefficiencies and wage inflation spirals. To reverse this trend, Jamaica must focus on strengthening institutional frameworks, fostering a productivity culture, encouraging technological innovation, and implementing effective labor market reforms. These steps are vital for improving economic performance, attracting investment, and elevating living standards.
