As an environmental science student, I understand that environmental justice involves ensuring all communities, regardless of race or income, receive fair treatment and have a voice in environmental decision-making. It aims to address systemic inequalities like environmental racism, which disproportionately affects marginalized groups. Key principles include equitable resource access, participation, and recognition of rights. I learned that promoting social and environmental equity is vital for creating sustainable communities. Recognizing injustices, such as location of toxic waste in low-income areas, and advocating for inclusive policies can mitigate these challenges. Personal involvement through community participation and supporting fair policies is essential. This knowledge equips me to contribute actively to building just environmental systems in my future career.
