My PhD Journey and Mentorship Experience at AIU
.
Pursuing my PhD at the university has been a transformative and intellectually enriching journey.
From the onset, I was welcomed into a dynamic academic environment that not only challenged me
to think critically and innovatively but also nurtured my growth as a researcher and scholar. The
program’s structure encouraged independence while offering structured guidance, and this balance
allowed me to delve deeply into my area of research analyzing the political, institutional, and
structural drivers of International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) implementation in Uganda.
One of the most outstanding aspects of my PhD journey was the exceptional support and mentorship
I received from the faculty. The tutors and professors were approachable, intellectually stimulating,
and always willing to offer constructive feedback. They consistently demonstrated a deep
commitment to academic excellence and student success. Their openness to ideas, timely
feedback on draft submissions, and encouragement during moments of academic fatigue were
instrumental in keeping me motivated and focused.
In particular, I am profoundly grateful to Professor Edward Lambert, whose mentorship made a
remarkable difference throughout my doctoral studies. Prof. Lambert’s guidance extended far
beyond academic supervision. He offered strategic insights that refined my research framework and
methodology, and his constructive critiques pushed me to elevate the analytical rigor of my work.
What set him apart was not only his scholarly expertise but also his genuine interest in my academic
development and personal well-being. His encouragement during my thesis presentations, coupled
with his calm and respectful demeanor, created a learning space where I felt both challenged and
supported.
Looking back, I consider myself fortunate to have been part of a program that combined academic
rigor with a culture of mentorship and respect. The experience has not only strengthened my
research capabilities but also deepened my appreciation for collaborative scholarship. It is an
experience I will carry forward with gratitude and pride as I continue contributing to the field of public
health and policy.
