I am Lanyuy Ngowela Jacqueline by name, a beneficiary of the unique and irrepeatable
opportunity offered to countless by the Atlantic International University. My journey with AIU
commenced with an application for admission in this prestigious institution which was
accompanied by an additional application for a scholarship. Fortunately for me, just when I had
forgotten about the fact that I had applied somewhere, that was when I received a call from the
school. This call was two faced, first to inform me about my admission, and then about a 70%
scholarship award. I really was so amazed. This good news came after a brief interview by Mr
JIMOH Joseph.
Prior to this phase, it is worth knowing, my reason for choosing to apply with AIU. I had a masters
degree in ‘International Trade and Investment Law in Africa” obtained at the University of
Dschang in the year 2013. I applied and was admitted for a PhD at the same university in 2014.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I passed the Bar part I examinations and had to undergo training as
an advocate-in-training with the Cameroon Bar Association. Due to financial constraints, I had to
focus on the training. This was how I lost the one and only opportunity I had, to obtain a PhD at
the University of Dschang in 2017. I later got married in June 2018 and my life took a different
turn. Being a worker, a wife and a mother, it became so challenging to face the realities of adult
education. Then came AIU with the magic.
The experience I had studying with AIU was just so fascinating. The organization was just
amazing. Having to move from the introductory stage, to the final stage which were classified into
four different stages, was a great one. I had a difficult time in phase II with the choice of the
courses, given that a cross section of the courses I needed were not included. However, as time
went on, I had exactly what I needed. This exposed me to the legal courses as a whole, and
permitted me to make a perfect choice for my desertation. Throughout this phase, I was pregnant
for my third baby and at the same time, was undergoing a second masters course in “Human Rights,
International Humanitarian Law and International Criminal Law” at the University of Dschang.
The most challenging aspect I had was, having to meetup with the financial requirements, despite
the 70% discount. This was due to the weight of my responsibilities amongst others. Not forgetting
the constant emails from Rosie Perez every month end, for tuition reminder. This explains why I
was not able to graduate last year as programmed. That not witstanding, this stress took a whole
of me, thus, I focused more on how to raise the money, than on completing my work. Thank
goodness it all ended in praise.
I am so grateful that AIU offered me this once in a lifetime opportunity and hope to have another
chance subsequently, to further with a post Doctorate degree. I look forward to working with AIU,
if given this golden opportunity. AIU is a place to be.
