Academic Freedom to Discover Your Purpose

Open Curriculum Design at Atlantic International University

A Doctorate in Linguistics is the highest academic degree available in the field of linguistics. Doctorate programs provide an avenue for individuals who want to contribute new knowledge/information about language, its structure, how it evolves, and its use.

Doctoral programs in linguistics usually include some form of a core selection of classes and electives that are dedicated to some advanced area of linguistics. The elective coursework includes advanced topics in phonetics, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, etc. Most doctoral candidates also consist of a series of comprehensive exams to show that they are proficient in the foundational linguistic theories and methodologies. In addition, part of a doctoral candidate’s program includes the preparation of a research proposal. The proposal should identify the research question to explore, the methodology of the research, and the potential contribution to monetizing the knowledge in this area of research. At the end of the doctoral program, the dissertation is the heart of the process, which is to complete an original research project that fills a gap in the literature and provides new information.

A Ph.D. in linguistics is a recognition of an individual’s knowledge and understanding of the discipline of linguistics. It opens doors to becoming an engaged contributor in the scholarly conversation of language and its complexities.

The potential of this program is to provide opportunities for research in specific areas of interest that enhance the operational-level knowledge and skills of experienced professionals in legal studies. What makes AIU’s Doctorate of Linguistics unique is our course design. We emphasize multi-faceted approaches to computer science, pulling together our understanding of theory and practical implementation.

What AIU offers in one further respect is an entirely new way of formulating “distance learning”. Our distance learning model is not one size fits all. Instead of using traditional models of assigning students to an area of study, we work with you and the advisor to formulate, together, a course of study based on your career and personal objectives. Each student’s course of study is unique to them thus supporting their needs and guiding them to success in their field.

Courses and Topics in Doctorate in Linguistics

Important: Below you’ll find a summary of the subjects and fields you can delve into and engage with throughout the course of your academic journey. It’s important to note that this list is neither exhaustive nor mandatory, as the graduate school programs at AIU might differ from conventional curriculum. Its main purpose is to serve as a guiding and visual aid. Are you interested in diving deeper into the curriculum framework at AIU?

The Ph.D. in Linguistics program provides an in-depth examination of a variety of courses and topics about language and communication. In their program of study, students examine a variety of topics, including how speech sounds are different from one another, how we code our ideas into language (semantics), how language is contextualized (pragmatics), and how we utilize computers to simulate language through Natural Language Processing. Of particular interest and focus is the examination of big data related to speech and language – the essence of computational linguistics.

The program is structured to provide students with advanced expertise in sound, syntax, and second language acquisition, as well as explicit training in linguistic computing, providing the student a thorough understanding of the technological side of linguistics. Students are also instructed on the aptitudes necessary for giving a presentation related to their original research in a professional domain to support the program’s academic excellence.

In addition to linguistic domains, the Ph.D. program provides students with the opportunity to specialize in applied fields. Courses are offered in audiology, language planning, technical writing, translation, publishing, editing, copywriting, broadcasting, news reading, and lexicography allowing students to take part in a diversification for the post graduate world, and for the application of the theoretical to the realistic dimension of reality. A graduate may operate a language planning project, work as a technical writer and editor, or be involved in the exciting realms of publishing and media.  The degree provides a versatility that will serve students greatly in their linguistic careers, in how they practice their knowledge and learnings.

Orientation Courses

The orientation classes in the Ph.D. in Linguistics program serve as a compass to guide you through the complex landscapes of language study. You engage with the distinctions between phonetics, semantics and pragmatics, and more broadly explore to what extent language is complex. The orientation classes instill technical knowledge in more sophisticated areas of language study (e.g. computational linguistics, and big data). These studies coincide with the program’s main goal: to prepare students through advance knowledge and the capacity to share original research in a professional way.
